Species: Opal var. hyalite w/ spessartine (garnet group) on orthoclase Locality: Tongbei, Yunxiao Co., Zhangzhou Prefecture, Fujian Province, ChinaSize: Miniature - 4.6 x 3.9 x 2.4 cm (1-7/8 x 1-1/2 x 1") Notes: In about 1998, these beautiful spessartines started appearing from China, although it wasn't revealed until a couple years ago exactly w they originate - at least these really do come from China, not Vietnam or somew else. Deception in mineral names is an old story; turquoise is named that because Turkish sellers, not wanting to reveal their Persian sources, told French buyers that the stones were local. "Turquoise" is French for "Turkish" - as the stone has been misnomered ever since. T's no hanky-panky about the aesthetics of this piece, with lovely, gemmy garnets popping through a coating of brightly fluorescent hyalite opal. Only a minority of Tongbei specimens are this luminous. BILBOBURGLAR GOES WEST...
