Beautiful SR-71 Blackbird Winging Over Snow Capped Mountains Photograph Signed by SR Pilot Col. Richard Graham! Mint! The SR-71 Blackbird was one of the most remarkable airplanes ever to grace the air. Capable of Mach 3+ speeds at altitudes of 85,000 feet, this reconnaissance platform flew over hostile territory with impunity. From 1968 to the 1990's the SR performed many secret missions over the most heavily defended airspace in the world, yet none were ever lost to enemy fire. Their flexible and reconnaissance capability are unmatched, even to this day. Although no longer in service, some of the speed and altitude records of the SR-71 will never be broken. The Blackbird is an enduring tribute to legendary aerospace designer Clarence Kelly. Although designed and built in the early 60's, it was, and is, the apex of jet technology. The SR-71's veil of secrecy contributed to its doom. Even though satellites have tremendous reconnaissance capability in their own right, their orbits are predictable both in time and location. Not so the SR-71.
