Exceptional pair of large cast iron bookends in the form of highly stylized cats. They are solid cast iron (weighing almost 5# each), with an added bronze patina. The bronze patina is nicely weathered overall showing some good age. They are not marked, but were definitely produced by a high end maker. These look and feel more like doorstops, but since there are two I figured them to be bookends. Condition is overall excellent with one sad exception: one of them had evidently been broken at the base at one time, and has been re-welded. The welding job was professionally done and does not detract much from the beauty of this pair. The repaired one is, however about 1/2" shorter, as can be seen in the back to back photo. I have also included photos of both bases to highlight the repaired weld. The repaired one stands 10.75" tall, and the other 11.25". The bases on both are 4" by 3". If anyone has seen these before, and knows anything about them, I would love to hear from you - but even without a "provenance" they are truly an exceptional decorative focal point!
