Beazell *** the American Red Cross *** a 50-year Anniversary FDC ABOUT THIS COVER The feature stamp on this very, very scarce FDC by Robert Beazell is the PO's 1931 50 Year Anniversary of the Founding of the American Red Cross 2¢ stamp, Scott # 702 About the inspiration for the feature stamp : i ndeed, it was in May of 1881 when Clara Barton, a Civil War Nurse who was dubbed " the Angel on the Battlefield ," founded the American Red Cross as a way for her to reach out to the American Civil War wounded. About this cover : as far as I know, Mr. Beazell was the first in Hobbyland to base his cachets ( a small percentage of them, that is ) upon photographic-looking and photograph-sized pictures of real-life people. This one is a crystal clear example of his contribution to the Hobby. Entitling his cachet A Nurse's Romance , Beazell spotlights a very beautiful World War I nurse, bicycling through the countryside, stopping to chat with an officer. Not only that, but check out the impeccable penmanship of the artfully printed address, which certainly enhances the cover's esthetic appeal all the more. All things considered , this is a cover ( 1 ) from a true Hobby pioneer ( 2 ) which concentrates on one of the Hobby's more popular of topicals ( 3 ) with really dreamy, stand-out cacheted imagery ( 4 ) and is about as scarce as they come. read more
