This listing is for one MAHOGANY Belaying Pin: 17 Inches long "a simple wooden device used by men who sailed the Tall ships, belaying pins were used to secure to rigging aboard the ship as well as by "press gangs" to forcibly obtain new recruits" In the days of the great sailing ships, belaying pins were a familiar site in the hands of sailors. On board ships, it was practice to secure or "belay" the free ends of the running rigging in figure eight fashion around a belaying pin. When it became necessary, the pin could be quickly removed from a rail on the ship's deck to free the rigging lines. Made of iron or native hardwoods, belaying pins, like the ships they served, are now a part of the past. On the few tall ships that remain, as well as on some yachts and naval vessels, belaying pins are still being used to secure rigging and signal halyards. These belaying pins are authentic full sized,(17 inches long) historically accurate reproductions of the used during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Turned by New England craftsman from solid pieces of select cabinet-grade hardwoods. Each pin is turned by hand to a super smooth natural finish. These unique marine artifacts are attractively gift boxed and included in the package is a document telling the history of the belaying pin. (Sample photo shown) Check out my other items !
