ygr026 Bell X-1A with Flight Data Superimposed 8 x 10 Photograph on Fujifilm paper Historic photograph of Chuck Yeager's Bell X-1A in flight high over the dry lakebed at Muroc air field (later Edwards Air Force Base) with the flight data from Yeager's record setting speed run. On December 12th, 1953 Chuck Yeager busted Scott Crossfield's then record of Mach 2 by flying the X-1A out to Mach 2.4 (1,650 mph) and 80,000 feet. This was the fastest a straight-winged airplane would ever fly. On this same flight, Yeager spun the aircraft out of control dropping 55,000 feet before regaining control.
