Belleek Irish Open Flute Shell Ornate Salt Cellar-Black Porcelain-5 You are bidding on an Antique Porcelain Belleek Irish Open Fluted Shell Ornate Salt Cellar with early Black Touch Mark. This is a beautiful example of Belleek and has touch marks on the bottom. Belleek-The firm began when in 1849 Caldwell Bloomfield inherited the CastleCaldwell Estate, which included the Village of Belleek in Ireland. This was the time of the great Potato famine and Caldwell sought to provide some employment for his tenants. Caldwell had studied mineralogy and found the necessary minerals to make pottery on the land, namely feldspar, kaolin, flint, clay and shale. The business was established in the Rose Isle section of the Village of Belleek which was close to the fast flowing River Erne which was sufficient to drive a mill wheel which combined the raw materials into a Ceramic Slip. Bloomfield then attracted some influential partners and a rail spur was built to bring coal into the region to firm the kilns used to sinter the ceramic slip. We have been privileged to be the exclusive market source for one of the largest collections of Salt Cellars in the world.
