A beautifully rendered Oil Ptg. on canvas laid down on heavy board by BENJAMIN DE HAVEN (1856-1934). Artsit signed at lower left hand, it is of size 11x14 inches, not counting befitting frame. It is in overall good condition - never restored or inpainted. Since the canvas was quite aged, I had it mounted on a board for security. It has been part of my collection for many years--and I am now offering several of these fine pieces for sale. The artist had a reputation as a poetic landscape painter of Florida and New England shoreline and mountainaous subjects. By mid-eighties he became known as "the American Barbizon". His paintings are characterized by excellent draftsmanship and thorough understanding of nature. One of his best paintings 'Evening at Monomet' is probably one of his most famous. It was shown in the American Art Galleries , New York in 1889. He was influenced by Henry Smillie who was known for nature paintings as well. As a popular tonalist painter, De Haven exhibited at the prestigeous National Academy of Design as well as the Salmagundi Club. His works are also part of permanent museum collections such as the Brooklyn Museum, Butler Institute youngstown , Ohio Well County Historical Museum.
