Governor of CT 1861-1862; a founding member Middletown Anti-Slavery Society, his home believed to have been a stop on Underground Railway. As Mayor of Middletown he refused to comply with the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act. Also inventor fire hydrants, pumps.Autograph letter signed in ink, B. Douglas, Aug. 27, 1861, Middletown, as Lieut.
