Benny Carter (North Carolina, 1943-2014) oil on canvas outsider folk art painting titled "The Garden of Eden U.S.A." The painting depicts pairs of animals surrounding a fenced-off Tree of Knowledge in the midst of a river, its branches swarming with snakes, tempting them to eat, and topped by a baboon, with angels watching from above. The work features satirical captions and American pop culture motifs including Elvis on a diving board with animals verbalizing titles of Elvis songs like "Don't Be Cruel". Inscribed "Benford Taylor Carter Jr. 11-29-1943" [the artist's full name and date of birth] lower left, and signed "Benny Carter" lower right. Housed in a painted wood frame with applied apple cutouts at each corner inscribed with the artist's name, date of birth, and the title of the work. Sight: 30 1/4" H x 25 1/4" W.
