ITEM DESCRIPTION: This outstanding and now exceedingly rare (still-sealed) 2CD set from Deutsche Grammophon (419 761-2, manufactured in West Germany, DDD stereo) features Leonard Bernstein's last large-scale work, his remarkable opera A Quiet Place, made with libretist Stephen Wadsworth and incorporating the former's earlier musical theater piece 'Trouble in Tahiti' (words and music by Leonard Bernstein). DG's recording of A Quiet Place was made 'live' at the Wiener Staatsoper in 1986 with the Bernstein leading the ORF-Symponie-Orchester (Austrian Radio Symphony Orchestra) and the following cast:Chester Ludgin Old SamBeverly Morgan DedeJohn Brandstetter JuniorPeter Kazaras FrançoisJean Kraft SusieTheodor Uppman BillClarity James Mrs. DocJohn Kuether Doc Charles Walker Funeral DirectorDouglas Perry AnalystWendy White DinahEdward Crafts Young SamLouise Edeiken TrioMark Thomsen Trio Kurt Ollmann TrioWhatever the prestige of the Vienna State Opera, it was not the ideal place to debut A Quiet Place, and Bernstein's opera was rather poorly received by both the Viennese critics and audiences. DG were no doubt reluctant to undertake such a recording, but they did it for their brilliant American conductor, though it enjoyed a fairly brief catalog life. Despite its faults, it remains a fascinating work with moments of great beauty and poignancy. CONDITION: Although this set remains unopened and unplayed, I would rate the condition of the outer slipcase as near-MINT. The shrinkwrap is mostly intact, though t are tears and a few small sections missing. T are a few areas of light discoloration to the slipcase box, as well as some minor bumping to the upper-left front corner. However, the discs, libretto, and jewel case are all in MINT condition. All-in-all, an excellent collector's copy of this rare set.
