Matchlessantiques is offering collectors and smiths this BIG 504 lb. John Brooks Blacksmith Anvil. This solid Cast Steel anvil is a high quality blacksmith anvil. It is one of the larger anvils made by Brooks. Anvils this size were used in shipyards, railroad shops, and other industrial shops. However, today's blacksmiths find these larger anvils a pleasure to work on due their stability and ample work area. The trademark reads "4 1/2 CWT SB, ENGLAND". This anvil's weight is marked as 4 1/2 CWT for 4.5 hundred weight (4.5 x 112 lb.) or 504 lb. This Brooks has a perfectly flat face. There are some use marks on the face and the edges are in good condition. The rebound is excellent. Brooks are well known for their excellent high quality anvils. John Brooks were made under the name "Brooks" first and handled by the Glendale Forge, Thaxted, Essex England. Most of these anvils only have the word "England" cast into the side, and some bear the name Brooks or JB for John Brooks. The weight can be in "CWTs," Kilograms or Pounds. These anvils were later referred to as Vaughan / Brooks and then Vaughan. Information credited to Richard Postman's book, Anvils In America. Please take a close look at the pictures.
