This is an absolutely gorgeous, large (approximately 17"x11"x4") , Athabaskan birch bark basket made by reknowned Alaska Native Athabaskan crafstman, Daisy Demientieff. If you are not familiar with Demientieff's impressive work, please learn more thru this link: /2009/07/03/853650/weaving-with-wood.html Now in her 70's, Demientieff is considered to be one of three remaining Native birch bark basket Masters in Alaska. She has been recognized as an American Master of Native Arts by two former Presidents, and has had her jewelry and basketry work on display at Smithsonian since receiving such recognition. All of Demientieff''s baskets are 100% natural, from the materials incorperated in their construction, to the dyes used in their design. From the gathering of the birch bark and roots, through preperation, dying and weaving, these baskets can take years to complete. Unfortunately, birch bark basket making is a dying art in Alaska, but Daisy Demientieff is a true master of her craft, and this basket is one of the finest I have seen, meticulously crafted by one of the very best Native-American artists alive today. Without question, this is a collector's item, certain to increase in value. This basket was completed in 1994 and has been carefully cared for in my smoke-free home since that time.
