A black bear of porcupine quills rambles across this barrette by Paul St John, Mohawk craftsman. The bear is made of black dyed porcupine quills and walks on green dyed quill "grass". This is on a birch bark oval with a border of yellow dyed quill - outer border of coils of sweetgrass. This is traditional quill on birch bark work innovatively made into a barrette. This bear could be displayed it while not wearing it, or affix it to a backpack, jacket or other regalia or clothing - or display it full time by framing it in a shadowbox...This is a larger barrette than some of Paul's other birch bark/quill barrettes (most are closer to 3" w/2.5" clasp) Barrette is 4.5" long and 2.5" high.
