Signed, Original Photograph of Black Elk, Revered Lakota Holy Man Original 8x10 sepia tone photograph of the revered Oglala Lakota holy man, Black Elk. This photograph was taken by Bill Groethe in 1948, and this is an original photograph, hand enlarged by Groethe, and signed and dated. Groethe photographed survivors of the Battle of the Little Bighorn in the Black Hills on September 2, 1948. This photograph is in pristine condition with not a mark on it (other than the signature!). This is an image of Black Elk - THE Black Elk - not the much photographed Ben Black Elk, Black Elk's son. Black Elk was near immortalized by John G. Neihardt's important book, Black Elk Speaks , followed by Neihradt's When the Tree Flowered . Black Elk was born in December 1863, the son of Black Elk, Snr., a contemporary of Red Cloud and Crazy Horse, and cousin to Crazy Horse's father. Black Elk, Snr. was severely wounded in the Fetterman Battle of December 21, 1866. His grandfather, also called Black Elk, was a grandfather to Crazy Horse. As a boy, Black Elk ( photographed) witnessed the Battle of the Little Bighorn and provided insights into the battle, including his own activities on Last Stand Hill when the fighting was over.
