One of my very best, a spectacular example of a Black Linglong Scholar Stone, also called a Gobi stone or a Fengli stone. This completely natural stone has been sculpted by eons of exposure to wind and rain. The black/brown coloring is called desert lacquer. The stone is exactly as collected from the Gobi desert near Xingjian. A wood stand has been artfully hand carved for display. The stone nests firmly into the stand. This is a investment quality stone. A very fine specimen. It is about 6 1/2 inches tall with the stand and is 6 1/4 inches wide. Also called meditation or contemplation stones, are much revered by collectors throughout the world. During the Tang Dynasty, 618 -907 AD they became very important to the scholar class, the Literati, of China. This was in part due to the encouragement of the Emporer, and primarily due to the Chinese love for all things of nature. The ancients believed stones were the bones of the earth. Many old paintings and porcelains have scenes depicting scholar stones in the home and in the garden. The Japanese art of collecting Sueseki or Bonsai stones, evolved from this Chinese devotion.
