Exact item with the same 19th Century pugilist's name had been offered on eBay from New York's Swann Galleries beginning at $400. If you move fast, you can win this exact example for chump change. 's the provocative and charming little back story. At a Cape Cod auction house in the best seller War of the Roses , Oliver Rose discovers his wife-to-be, bidding against him (as young students with good taste but little money) for Staffordshire pearl ware figurines of legendary pugilists Tom Cribb and the black American challenger Tom Molyneux aka "Molineaux." His bid wins Cribb and hers wins Molineaux and his pursuit of her brings the two famed boxers together -- until the Roses' turbulent marriage comes to a crashing end. This piece of unknown origin or date offered is a homage statuette to the famous American boxer Tom Molyneux (aka Molineaux) 1784-1818, a freed slave, before traveling to New York and later, England w he fought in London. This figurine is cast from a ceramic body and finished with assorted hand-painted color glazes and in a style that is reminiscent of Staffordshire. Rare and impossible to find, whether real or copy. Great for the boxing collector, book collector, movie collector, Staffordshire pearl ware collector. Unmarked, undated. 7.75" tall. Actual age, origin, artist unknown.
