1/4 th Plate Ambrotypeof a Civil War Soldier so well focused you can see the blood vessels in his eyes. The image has excellent focus and contrast. This ambrotype was made to appear positive by the photographer placing a tintype with a black surface behind the image which was then fixed in place by gluing a paper cover over the plate. Quarter Plate Images taken this close and well focused are scarce because of the long focus times required. A law in physics states that the intensity of light is inversely proportional to the square of the distance (i=1/d 2). That means when an image is projected larger by moving the photographic plate back away from the lens, the intensity of light falls off rapidly creating a much larger exposure. Although there are lots of 1/9 th Plate Images with great detail, 1/4 th Plate Images of people are much harder due to the seconds and seconds and seconds of exposure required while the subject remains stone cold still. The Image is housed in very nice case with a repaired hinge. Included free is a CD containing a 300dpi representation of this image.
