The Boeing 747 is a large, wide-bodied airliner manufactured by Boeing Aircraft Company. In April, 1966, Pan American ordered 25 of the first 747's, the 747-100. In late 1966, Pratt & Whitney agreed to develop its JT9D, a high bypass turbofan engine. On September 30, 1968, the first 747 was rolled out of the Everett, Washington plant. The first flight took place on February 09, 1969, and the 747 was certified in December of that year. There were a total of 167 747-100's manufactured.Trans World Airlines introduced the 747 to it's fleet in 1970. The airlines had 25 '100's in service from 1970 to 1998. One of those aircraft was Flight 800, that exploded and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near East Moriches, New York on July 17, 1996. The aircraft exploded 12 minutes after take-off, killing all 230 people on board. While it initially was thought to be a terrorist attack, it was eventually concluded that a spark had ignited fuel vapors in the aircraft's center fuel tank. This aircraft with registration number N93101, was delivered to TWA on August 18, 1970. It flew under TWA colors until March of 1975 when the aircraft was sold to another carrier. This Flight Miniatures 1:200 scale solid resin reproduction of that aircraft is a rare and beautiful detailed model, and is displayed in the flight configuration. It requires only minimal assembly. read more
