These men are armed with the older single shot Martini-Henry rifle - nevertheless a powerful weapon. Origins & materials : The mounted prints I assemble are the original paper pages from publications issued at the time of the 2nd Anglo-Boer War. They are not photocopies, scans or modern reproductions on glossy paper. Any imperfections in print are therfore due to the limitations of printing processes of the time. The mounts are modern, new, of good quality & with backing board. They are ready to frame in standard frames of your design choice. Please note: these are not ready- framed prints -see photos. The Second Anglo-Boer War ran from 1899 to 1902. It was fought between Great Britain and her Dominion allies against the Boer republics: the Orange Free State and the Transvaal. An initial period of open warfare ensued in which the British tried to fight a traditional type of warfare against a very mobile and elusive enemy most of whom excelled at fieldcraft & accuracy with the Mauser magazine rifle. The British forces initially suffered some ignominious defeats and were besieged in Ladysmith, Mafeking and Kimberley. Ultimately, they were reinforced and readjusted their tactics to raise the sieges & defeat the Boer forces. Then followed a bitter & often controversial period of highly mobile, small-action guerilla warfare & scorched earth policy gradually forcing the 'bitter-enders' into a final capitulation in 1902. It led ultimately to the formation of the Union of south Africa. These prints when framed make a fitting tribute to all who took part or were affected on either side in this bitter conflict, whether soldier or civilian, white or black, combatant or innocent caught up in the struggle. A note on Boer War art: These pictures are typical of art and photography produced for a hungry home consumption eager for pictures from the front. Today, they may be considered over-patriotic, sentimentalised or one-sided. They were however, typical of the style of the day & what the readers wanted to see. Whatever your viewpoint of this conflict, what cannot be denied is the artistic quality and detailed realism rarely seen today and depicted by artists who were often working from another's sketch or oral description . With photographic images one must also marvel at the patience & doggedness of these men dragging round cartloads of equipment to get interesting portraits of life as near to the front as the technology and terrain would allow!
