Hand Made Raku Flat sphere This Raku flat sphere is 5 inches or 12.5 cm across It was made at Elwick Mill Pottery.on the island of Shapinsay Orkney It has a deep rich turquoise glaze with crackle throughout and white crackle rim, it has a copper lustre inside This is a nice piece of raku ware, and has my makers stamp underneath Made in September 2011 by David Holmes here at Elwick Mill Pottery Raku ware is not recomended for food use due to the porus body of the clay The word raku means pleasure and enjoyment and is the name that was given to a Korean potter in the sixteenth centuary by a then powerful aristocrat-ruler Modern day Raku ware is very different from the wares produced in the sixteenth centuary, at that time very simple glazes were used, made with toxic lead and were mostly a dull black or red colour. Lead glazes are not now used, and instead much safer materials are used.
