BOWSER Fort Wayne Ratchet Screw Driver - **Super Rare** BOWSER "PAT" Spirial Screw DriverS. F. Bowser invented and patented his first kerosene pump in 1885 and this evolved into his world-famous Self-Measuring Gasoline Storage Pump. They were safe, reliable and used all over the country and all over the world. According to the great web site of Old Tools 'n Stuff (/yankeescrewdriverpage.htm) the ratchet or spiral screw driver dates back to 1868. The North Brothers began marketing the famous YANKEE screwdriver in 1899. This is a YANKEE-style ratcheting screwdriver marked: S. F. BOWSER & CO., PAT, FT. WAYNE, IND. I've been in Fort Wayne for 25+ years and BOWSER items are rare; tools made in and marked FORT WAYNE are even more rare. This BOWSER marked tool is the first I have encountered. I suspect it was part of a tool set provided by BOWSER to install and maintain his pumps. In the closed position it is 16" long; open it is 23 1/2". It provides both right and left action to the bit, controlled by the knurled band seen in the 6th photo. The bit is marked IRWIN. The steel knurled band above the bit unscrews to loosen the jaws and release the bit. Operates smoothly and is in really good condition for its age. Solidly made at almost 1 1/2 pounds. Looks to be all original, except the bit. Winner adds $16 for careful packing, full insurance read more
