I purchased a warehouse lot of old bakelite costume jewelry. I saw the saws, lathes, drum tumblers and polishing wheels that were used to make the old bakelite bracelets. I climbed inside the huge tumblers, I inhaled the fine bakelite dust that was covering every thing. It was irritating and toxic. When bakelite was no longer available, bracelets were made of a different thermosetting resin and an acrylic called Lucite. It was cast & then cut ,carved and polished on the same equipment that was previously used for bakelite which was a phenolic resin. These are heavy weights not the cheap injection molded plastic. They are Lucite. These will sink in water just as bakelite and have the same density 1.2 grams/milliliter. These bracelets were made by a complicated process in which 12 inch cylinders were cast using different colored resins cast in a concentric shape after each pouring had hardened. True laminates. Highly polished. Size is 2 1/2" inside and a healthy 3 7/8" outside and about 3/8" thick. Gorgeous peach, raspberry, pink, fuscia, clesar . They sound nice when 3 or 4 are worn together & clunk nicely.( photo is Nancy Cunard steamship heiress who began style or wearing multiple bracelets.) Oprah said many years ago that these later bracelets are good collectibles, These elegant flashy retro 50's style bracelets make impressive sets. Gorgeous
