This is a fabulous and quite lovely antique cameo depicting what I believe is Athena, goddess of war in her war bonnet. This is the most delicate & beautiful carving I have ever seen. The artist used horned helmet shell, but carved deep into the soft white layer to create the profile, and kept the darker orange-brown color only for the helmet. The piece is very rare and very old as you can see. It has its original mesh thick necklace attatched to the top of this BREATHTAKING piece. Please take a look at the deep red helmet and hair as it flows down her back. This appears that is may be 800 silver which was typical of this era however I coudl find no marking on this fantastic rare piece. The piece is in marvelous condition, from age has some hairlines which are not cracks and appear part of the piece, you can see them in the photo. It is simply a delicate exquisite rare portrayel. The Cameo itself is approx 2 1/4 inches tall and 1 3/4 inches wide in its bezel. The chain which is the original one is about 18 inches long to the clasp, and is indeed in wonderful condition and over 1/4 of an inch thick. BEAUTIFUL RARE FIND! NO RES!
