Hawkes collection and was sold at auction May 28, 1897 Sale, Lot 199. This example is noted in "British Gallantry Medals" by Abbott/Tamplin.NOTE this medal is without 1848 under the bust and "For" is engraved.Captain of the Forecastle John Taylor was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal for services with the Naval Brigade at Sebastopol, June 18, 1855.Taylor was awarded a Victoria Cross (London Gazette February 24, 1857) for the same act of bravery.Captain of the Forecastle John Taylor died February 24, 1857.Only 11 Conspicuous Gallantry Medals (Victoria, type 1) were awarded.Only 39 Navy Victoria Crosses were awarded between 1856 to 1913.The medal comes with official ribbon and is in extremely fine condition.Sold with some research.AB0013Digital photos were taken in artificial light, and do not always show colors properly.
