Two volumes bound in one. FIRST ELEPHANT FOLIO. 15.5" x 11.5" Inches. (LxB). Pp. xxvi, 1-92; 93-204 pages + illustrated with 41 fine chromolithographs, 38 engraved heading views of regions where the fish are found and numerous in-text diagrams. The title is printed in red and black. Each image is accompanied by steel engraved vignette of the lake or stream in which the fish was caught. All edges gilt. In a fine original 3/4 green crushed morocco leather binding over matching green cloth boards, spine with 5 raised bands & gilt lettering in the 2nd compartment. The superb plates, providing a colored illustration of each species, were drawn from nature by A. F. Lydon. Each plate shows fish in their natural habitat, swimming or superimposed on a contemporary landscape setting. Houghton based his work from specimens found in the British Museum. �Houghton, a Shropshire clergyman, aimed his book at the fisherman rather than the naturalist, and the text gives information about recognition, feeding and breeding habits, habitat, bait and so on� (Buchanan, Nature into Art, 168).
