British War Medal named: M2-020367 PTE. J. CUNNINGHAM. A.S.C. James Cunningham enlisted aged 21 in November 1914 into the Army Service Corps and gave his address as Stanwix, Newlands, Glasgow. He served with the 38th Division Motor Company and then as a car driver with the 95th Field Ambulance attached to the Royal Army Medical Corps. He then serves as an ambulance driver with the 98th Field Ambulance and during this service he is wounded on duty in April 1918 and awarded a Military Medal for Bravery in the Field which is recorded in the London Gazette 12-06-1918. His service papers (available on Ancestry) go on to record his character as 'absolute' and that he is 'a first class man and a splendid driver under fire'. James is very likely to have won his MM for driving an ambulance under heavy fire, risking his life to get the wounded men to safety. It is very likely based on the London Gazette date that the MM was awarded for the same action in which he was wounded, maybe driving the ambulance to safety under fire and wounded. The medal is in very good uncleaned condition with clear naming and is sold with a print of the medal index card, London Gazette entry and summary of the service papers. This medal offers a fantastic opportunity to own a medal to a very brave man who risked his life unarmed to drive wounded men to safety, read more
