Long, long before Bruce Lee put Wing Chun on the map of theworld, it was his mentor Sifu Wong Shun-leung who was the art’s poster boy. Founded by a woman, Wing Chun had a ‘sissy image’ * and it did not endear itself to those keen to take lessons in kung fu and were, understandably, more impressed with the highly stylized macho movements executed by the exponents of other schools. Consequently, Wing Chun’s sign-up rate was abysmally poor. Undeterred, Sifu Ip Man encouraged his students to put Wing Chun theory and the lessons he taught them to practice on the streets and rooftops. After all, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Wing Chun’s straight punches and boring low kicks carried the day – thanks largely to one man: Wong Shun-leung, THE KING FIGHTER.
