Long, long before Bruce Lee put Wing Chun on the map of theworld, it was his mentor Sifu Wong Shun-leung who was the art’s poster boy. Founded by a woman, Wing Chun had a ‘sissy image’ * and it did not endear itself to those keen to take lessons in kung fu and were, understandably, more impressed with the highly stylized macho movements executed by the exponents of other schools. Consequently, Wing Chun’s sign-up rate was abysmally poor. Undeterred, Sifu Ip Man encouraged his students to put Wing Chun theory and the lessons he taught them to practice on the streets and rooftops. After all, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Wing Chun’s straight punches and boring low kicks carried the day – thanks largely to one man: Wong Shun-leung, THE KING FIGHTER. Like Yuen Kay-san (1889 – 1956) did in Fatsan from the 1920s to the 1950s, Sifu Wong fought the most and the hardest for the good name of Wing Chun in Hong Kong! With his unbroken string of victories on the rooftops, all lasting but a few brief seconds, Wing Chun’s popularity grew. Wong Shun-leung was Wing Chun’s walking advertisement. He let his hands do the talking. That’s why these fights were known in local parlance as Kong Sau or TALKING HANDS: ‘Let’s cut the crap and mumbo-jumbo as to whose style is better. Stamp our style’s superiority on the rooftops.’ Just as Rocky Marciano was the undefeated champion in the boxing ring, Wong Shun-leung was the UNDEFEATED CHAMPION in the rooftop fights. He only ended his illustrious rooftop fighting exploits when he bumped into one of his conquests on the streets one day and found out to his horror that he had inadvertently blinded his hapless challenger in one eye. And that’s not all … he had once deafened a man with his Wing Chun pole. Though slight of build, weighing only a mere 125 pounds (about 56.7 kg), Sifu Wong, at the age of 34, took on a Russian Heavyweight Boxing Champion of 240 pounds (about 108.9 kg), who was once ranked Top Five Boxers in the World, and with his silky and “sissy” Wing Chun skills came out on top. No introduction on Sifu Wong would be complete without special coverage of Bruce Lee and the influence and impact he had had on the Little Dragon who once penned a letter of gratitude to Sifu Wong: ‘Even though I am technically a student of Yip Man, in reality I learned my Kung-fu from you.’ Sifu Wong always carried this letter in his wallet. It was perhaps his best advertisement after he ended his rooftop fights. Say no more! Once asked if he was the best fighter in the world, Sifu Wong modestly replied, ‘No, only the second best’; when then asked who was the best, he said, ‘I have not met him yet.’ This set of 2 DVDs, housed in a double-casing, is presented by Sifu Wong’s close-door student Sifu Li. It covers 16 chapters of Wing Chun as taught by THE KING FIGHTER , the man who put theory to practice and found out the hard way what worked and what didn’t.
