Buchschmid & Gretaux Marquetry Tray Made in Germany ITEM DESCRIPTION: For your consideration is a wooden marquetry tray made by artisans Buchschmid and Gretaux, from the Black Forest of Germany. Most people are familiar with the marquetry pictures or wall plaques created by Buchschmid and Gretaux; however, they also produced wood inlay trays and furniture. This tray is rectangular in shape with a fabric back and brass butterfly handles on each end. The tray features a crest or possibly a family coat of arms and was created with veneers in natural colors. It was purchased at the Otto Chlup ABC Studio in Heidelberg, Germany in the mid 1900's. Although most Buchschmid and Gretaux marquetry pictures bear the "BG" signature, not all their pieces were signed, and I did not find their mark on the tray. There are two labels on the back of the tray (see pictures) that identify the art work by "BG" and the Otto Chlup ABC Studio. Buchschmid and Gretaux referred to their work as "wood inlay pictures", although they are now commonly termed "marquetry". The two artists split the picture-making tasks evenly. Mr. Gretaux was the artist and was ultimately responsible for coming up with the designs and patterns, while Mr. Buchschmid was the craftsman and handled the veneers and the production.
