Up for auction this week are my old, well seasoned FULL LENGTH, DELAWARE INDIAN STYLE SIDE- SEAM BUCKSKIN LEGGINGS of the French/Indian, Rev. War Periods ! This type of legging was used extensively not only by Indian warriors of the period, but by many Riflemen, "Couriers de Bois", "bush-lopers" and Rangers. They were often worn over one's breeches to keep the linen from being torn to shreds by the brush and thorns of wilderness roads & trails! Many accounts of men on the frontier state that while many wore clout and hunting shirt, almost all wore buckskin leggings! In creating my wild & wooley frontier woods-runner persona, I felt that good leggins were very important and I never failed to get compliments on my regalia & accouterments. But, as I have not been in the hobby for some years now, everything must go! And these are really cool looking leggins! Made from two soft-tanned, natural colored buckskins, I hand-sewed the side seams with imitation sinew and made them very "form fitting" as was common to the young men of my portrayal. As the skin stretched in use, I re-sewed them to keep them tight, resulting in several lines of stitching. T were several small holes in the skins when I bought them and I have stitched them closed.(FYI...the Indians commonly had their women stitch the seams while the man was wearing the legging to read more
