Ornithoptera paradisea arfakensis - FEMALE Species Information: Ornithoptera paradisea is one of the most rare and highly prized butterflies in the world. It is found only in the rain forests of New Guinea w it spends most of its time high in the tree canopy. Interestingly, the small, thin tails of the male make it a very poor flier so they wait around for a female to come to them! This is quite different from other male butterflies who actively search for a female with which to breed. Since its discovery in 1893 at least 6 different subspecies have been described. The subspecies offered is "arfakensis" from Irian Jaya. Don't miss out on this incredible female or the amazing male above!
