Up for auction is: A simply amazing and regal Handcarved Ebony and Ivory Elephant from the 1800's appraised at over $300.00. This elephant is a true work of art. One of the best examples we have seen. We are so tempted to keep it, as it is just amazing. The elephant stands 7 inches tall, and about 9 inches long from the tips of its ivory tusks to the end of its tail. The smoothness of the ebony is beautiful. The detail in this carving is just amazing, showing every muscle, and detail. The ivory glows with warmth, and is all intact. Most pieces from this time period are missing toenails, have tusks broken, or much more serious fissures, but not this guy...all of the ivory is intact and just beautiful. T are some minor naturally occuring fissures that have been repaired just behind his right temple. It is a very small double split that runs down his right ear. Again, considering the age, this is minimal. You can see a close up of the damage in our pictures. This came from an estate of 5 generation of collectors. This particular item belonged to the great grandmother, who was quite fond of elephants. We were told that they had it appraised at over $300.00 some time ago.
