This gorgeous HAND-MADE ANTIQUE TABLECLOTH was crocheted by hand during the final years of WWII . I've framed my photographs very carefully so the pattern would reveal itself to you. The simple description is that THIS IS A PATTERN OF DOGWOOD BLOSSOMS . But the full truth is more complex and much more interesting: the artist who crocheted this quilt designed the pattern so that YOU CAN "BREAK DOWN" EACH LARGER DOGWOOD BLOSSOM INTO A COMPLEX PUZZLE-LIKE COMPOSITION OF TINY LEAVES AND FLOWERS . So my photos can be explained THUS : 1.) You might want to start by looking at PHOTO #2, which shows just ONE repeat of the four-petal LARGER dogwood blossom. Then move back to PHOTO #1 and you'll see that t are FOUR such "dogwood blossom" motifs in this photo -- two in the top row and two in the bottom row. 2.) PHOTO #3 shows a view that's approximately (2.5 motifs) x (1.5 motifs) you see 2.5 motifs working HORIZONTALLY and 1.5 motifs working VERTICALLY. 3.) I took PHOTO #4 on my lawn, laying the tablecloth down very lightly on top of the grass for a minute or two so I could show you the ENTIRE TABLECLOTH -- it's so big that this is as close as I could get to an ENTIRE full view (after all, it's SIX FEET by A BIT MORE THAN SEVEN FEET -- a handsomely ample size). 4.) Look at PHOTO #2 once more -- see the FOUR PETALS making up the dogwood blossom?Now look at PHOTO #5 -- this CLOSE-UP shows JUST ONE PETAL of the flower (the lower right-hand petal, specifically). 5.) PHOTO #6 shows a total of TWO COMPLETE FLOWERS -- one stacked on top of the other. This tablecloth measures 72" x 86 ." It's probably a bit small for most modern dining room tables (unless you have a smaller family and/or live in an apartment that's not super-huge). However, it's going to be the perfect size for most kitchen tables & will be perfect for "dressing them up" for holidays, parties. etc. Obviously, this is a RECTANGULAR TABLECLOTH, but I've tried it on a CIRCULAR TABLE (that was 54" in diameter) and it looked really cute. If your table is circular, the tablecloth will fall EIGHT INCHES LOWER ON SIDES C & D THAN IT DOES ON SIDES A & B = but this can be a very pretty, casual, "shabby chic" kind of a look , as though you've gots tons of aesthetic taste but you have better things to do with your precious time than "try too hard." (Of course, if you tend to put one side of your circular table against a wall , you can pull the tablecloth down in the front so that it LOOKS like you've laid a square-tablecloth-on-a-circular-table -- at 72" x 86," t's more than enough spare tablecloth to pull off this kind of look too.) I'm sure this has already occurred to everybody but just in case, I'll mention that this type of ( very ) open-work crocheted lace tablecloth looks absolutely beautiful when displayed on top of an under-cloth. This way you can color-key the cloth to the interior design in a particular room, or you can create color combinations that will help you decorate for the holidays (blue-under-white would be gorgeous for Chanukah, green or red-under-white for Christmas, etc.) However, t's certainly no need for an under-cloth -- a ravishingly beautiful hand-made tablecloth like this will look perfectly beautiful laid over most table-tops all by itself. If your table is made of a gorgeous wood like mahogany, cherry, walnut or oak, you're that much ahead of the game!
