Charlie Craven (1909-1991) turned for Tobacco Road Pottery between 1979 and 1988. Only a handful of pieces were salt-glazed stoneware (fired at the kilns of Ben Owen II and M.L. Owen), so this is a rare offering. Most of Charlie's work for Tobacco Road was earthenware. Stamped "C.B. Craven" and "Tobacco Road" this piece was turned and fired between the years 1981 and 1983. As the photos make clear, Charlie was one of the best turners to ever come out of the Seagrove and Westmoore areas in North Carolina. He was the last potter in the continuous line of Craven potters dating back to Peter Craven in the mid-1700s. Measuring 11 inches tall with a diameter of 7 3/4 inches, the jug is an outstanding example of Charlie's skill. It is in perfect condition. It has a nice spattering of iron oxide flecks in the stoneware clay that gives it added character and is a beautiful piece. Shipping will be $12.00 with Insurance extra. If payment is by personal check, item will be shipped once check clears.
