I got this artist piece at an estate auction. I don't know much about art, but this is a stunning piece. It is matted and framed and entitled "Tigua" by R.C. Gorman. The back has a paper attached that says "R.C. Gorman, who virtually requires no introduction, is not only numbered among the nation's superlative American Indian artists but is also recognized as one of the most brilliant painters working in the United States today, regardless of style and source of inspiration. Born and raised on the Navajo Reservation in Chinle, Arizona, Gorman was educated in Arizona. A graduate of Ganado High School and of Arizona State University, he also studied art at Guam Territorial College in the Marianas Islands and at the University of the Americas in Mexico City. From 1951 through 1955, he served in the United States Navy. The recipient of the first scholarship awarded by the Navajo Tribe for international study, Gorman is an active supporter of all Indian artistic and cultural projects. As the owner of the Navajo Gallery in Taos, New Mexico, he provides work and display space , as well as encouragement for Southwestern Indian artists from all Tribes.
