c1732 Rapin/Tindal Map: Plan of the Camp of Tarragona This map is 14 x 18.5 inches, BW, Copper-plated engraved. Title block along bottom margin, reads " Plan of the Camp of Tarragona. For Mr. Tindal's Continuation of M. Rapin's History of England". Has an outstanding decorative cartouche, with perhaps Neptune, and serpents winding around the carouche, and the Scale inside. In addition t are 3 warships depicted in the Mediterranean Sea. Great topographic detail with the hills identified and named and a notation on the map that reads" The Hills marked with crosses are impracticable for Cavalry". A great looking map and as well a real piece of history. VG overall condition with a little offsetting . Paul de Rapin lived an interesting life. After a succession of military adventures, including service in the Prince of Orange's Irish campaign ( Battle of Boyne), he settled in Holland and began his 8 volumes " History of England". Nicholas Tindal published the work in London between 1725 and 1731 and revised it in later editions. The maps are related to the War of Spanish Succession which was concluded by the Treaties of Utrecht. This was another in the series of dynastic wars that rolled across Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries.
