WRITTEN ORIGINALLY IN FRENCH BY MR DUMONT, BARON CARELSCROON LONDON PRINTED BY JAMES BETTENHAM, FOR CLAUDE DU BOSC MDCCXXXV Selling here is a defective two volume set of 'The Military History of his Serene Highness Prince Eugene of Savoy...' printed in London by James Bettenham. Volume I with the additional title dated 1735 and volume II dated 1737 as called for. This being a translation by John Campbell of 'Histoire militaire du prince Eugene de Savoye, du prince et duc de Marlborough et du prince de Nassau-Frise', by Jean Dumont, baron de Carlscroon and Jean Rousset de Missy. With engravings throughout by Claude du Bosc. From the library of Captain Robert Laurie.Folio, two volumes bound in period full calf gilt with red morocco labels.The books measure 26.5cm by 38cm.The text within the second volume is seemingly continuous and complete; the first volume is lacking engraved title plus final two leaves (pp. 389-391). Our collation reading: [4], iv, 388; [4], 360pp. With both halftitles present: The Battles of His Serene Highness...; letterpress titles in red and black (dated 1735 and 1737 respectively); retaining 5 engraved plates including frontispiece to vol II (detached) and 4 folding plans: volume I - plan of Marseille; Plan of Hulst; Plan of the Lines of Stolhoffen in Alsacia; Volume II with plan of the Battle fought near Winendael. Volume I also contains 1 unpaginated leaf bound after the plan of Marseille entitles: The Order of the Battle of the Allied Army. Both volumes with engraved headpieces and historiated initials. This is one of a number of antiquarian books we are listing today, please View My Other Items For Sale Condition: The bindings are holding firmly and in good condition, with some general wear to surface / extremities from handling, backstrips chipped with some loss at head/foot, notably to vol I, which has some surface cracking and abrasion, corners bumped. Contents are holding firmly and are generally in good clean condition only, a little toned, with some light scattered foxing, occasional creases or dust marking, some dampmarking toward lower edges with resultant chipping to edges, a number of fragmented closed tears and sporadic dampsoiling, a tattered portion of pp. 389/90 in vol I remaining (not included in pagination above), frontispiece of vol II detached and ragged, a few smudges and light pencil markings in same volume, vol II more notably dampmarked and with some worming to margins in lower corner. Upper fe creased and loose in vol I, original plain endpapers, both upper free endpapers with early ink inscription of Captain Robert Laurie, with later bookplate of Sir Robert Laurie.
