American Hollow-Cut Silhouette Description An unusual antique American hollow-cut silhouette portrait of a mature woman facing right. On the reverse of the silhouette is the identification: "E A Lyman, Mother". The silhouette is in good antique condition and I would date it to the 1840's, possibly 1850's. The ink and watercolor decoration is quite unusual. The silhouette is hollow-cut; i.e., the outline is cut away from white paper and placed over a dark or black background, either paper or fabric. The torso area is decorated with swirls and dots in black ink in a style very like calligraphy; the head is embellished with a bit of black "hair" above her forehead and with blue & tiny red dots on the crown and back of her head as well as two ringlets of hair seen under her chin. The silhouette measures about 3" x 1.5" and is displayed behind glass and a black mat in an older painted molded wood frame, measuring in total 5.25" x 4" not including the hanging ring. The only other silhouettes I have seen with similar inked decoration are a pair of husband and wife silhouettes that are offered in another listing.
