c1865 Carte De Visite (CDV) Photo of Two Lovely Young Women, with a Civil War Tax Stamp. It is an outstanding, period photograph, featuring 2 women in a typical apparel, hair styles and collars of the era. It was produced by Benjamin Lochman' Photography Gallery, whose studio was located in Allentown, PA. He ran his business there for several decades. It's good condition. Although the photograph is clear with great detail, there are three mild creases. The edges are strong, as well as the corners, although they have been clipped by a previous owner, for placement in a CDV photo album, to protect it from damage. The back of the CDV does have a bit of surface soiling and foxing. It is an outstanding, period photograph, featuring two women standing, in a typical apparel, hair styles and collars of the era.The CDV card measures approx. 3-1/2" X x 2-1/4" (9 cm. X 5.5 cm. ) and is mounted on its original Card Mount, which measures approx. 4" X 2-3/8" (10.3 cm X 6.3 cm.) It was produced by Benjamin Lochman' Photography Gallery, whose studio was located in Allentown, PA. He ran his business there for several decades.This lovely photograph is in good condition. Although the photograph is clear with great detail, there are three mild creases. The back of the CDV does have a bit of surface soiling and foxing. (Please see all of the photos to confirm the condition of this CDV.)Benjamin Lochman was a very busy man in the Allentown, PA area. The census information and Allentown Business Directories show that he operated his Photographic Gallery from 1860 until at least 1905. Obviously photography was in his blood. He was born in 1825 and died May 3, 1912. He married Catharine, and they had three children born between 1850-1860.Revenue Stamp, 1864 Luxury Tax By Act of CongressOn the back of this CDV card there is a revenue stamp, which helps date the photo to between June 30, 1864, and August 1866. Back during the Civil war the government was desperate for money to fund the war effort. Since photographs were a new-fangled "luxury" product at that time, they were taxed. Sellers of all types of photographs affixed stamps to the backs of photographs at the time of sale, and then the photographer would cancel the stamp by initializing and sometimes dating it. It was common to simply canceled with a quick stroke of the pen. Stamps specifically for photographs were never produced, and it was left up to the photographer to use some type of stamp of the proper denomination. Playing cards were also taxed as a luxury item, and during the summer of 1866, "playing card" stamps were used to make up for the face that official postage stamps were in short supply.Please see the close-up photo of the 2¢ Stamp . If you can read 19th Cen. handwriting, you can (somewhat) clearly see that it was initialed BCL, for Benjamin C.
