The item up for sale is an antique amputating surgeons kit made by J. H. Gemrig of Philadelphia circa 1866-1881.The box measures 16 3/8 inches long X 6 inches wide X 3 inches high.The box has bronze bands on the corners of the sides and bronze corners on the lid.The outside of the lid has an oval bronze inset with an engraved name : "T. De Myers, MD."The inside of the lid has an oval leather label with gilt stamped letters & decorations which reads : Manufactured by J. H. Gemrig, 109 South Eighth St. Philada."The address dates the box to after 1866. "Sons" was added to their labels in 1882, so the present label predates this, making the boxes date circa 1866 to 1881.The box is made of 'tiger' striped mahogany and is in good condition aside from light surface cracks on the right side of the lid, small nicks on the front edges and several small surface scuffs & scratches.The box is missing the key for the lock.The box contains 21 surgeons tools. 17 of the tools are stamped "Gemrig" on either the handles or the edges of the tools, including the amputating saw & all of the bone handled tools. The tweezers are stamped with an S surmounted by a crown. The scraper on the upper tray is stamped "C. Truax & Co." {a late 1800's surgery tool maker from Chicago], and the large snips under the amputating saw are stamped : "BETZ". The tourniquet read more
