c1870 VICTORIAN 9CT ROLLED ROSE GOLD MEMENTO LOCKET This a lovely Antique 9ct Rolled Rose Gold Double sided Memento locket ., . This is such a nice size and has two TINTYPES on either side.. Although t is no glass covering these photos..it appears t never were any, as I was advised these are tintypes ... Included will be a nice fine complimentary chain on which to hang this HISTORY
It is Circa 1870 by design and styling...but may be much earlier.. This dear locket is a nice find..it is a beautiful antique soft rose gold color ... While not marked for gold content the outer surface tests positive for 9 carat, and is from a British Estate and is Rolled Gold..quite common in Victorian times with these lockets... Rolled Gold has an outer layer of solid 9 carat gold over an underlying metal, and is considered by antique jewellers to be equivalent to todays low karat gold. DESCRIPTION & SIZING It weighs approx 5 grams .which further adds to its appeal !! It has smooth edges ... It measures 3/4" not including the bale... The photos magnetize.. and are metal.. which I was advised what tintypes were produced on... One side is a stately gent and the other perhaps his loved one? The gentleman appears to have a war uniform on..and I was advised this photo was around the time of the Civil War Era These lockets hold an extreme fascination for me.... These photos authenticate the item and hold such nostalgia.......it just has that BEAUTIFUL olde worlde charm. The only fault I can see is a tiny bit of wear on the edge of the locket at about eleven o'clock on the womans side.. .....but this is consistent with its vast age and not noticeable when being worn........ it has a few little tiny teeth marks around the outer rim..very tiny.. as Victorian Mothers often used their gold lockets to soothe babies sore gums when teething......such a history this must have. ! It has a rose gold hang ring ready to attach to your favourite antique chain or the one supplied. Please note that the pictures do not show the beautiful soft rose gold and it looks very dull and drab...it was so difficult to photograph due to the reflection from the glass...but it is ROSE GOLD in color.
