Mappe-Monde en Deux Hemisps - Map of World in Two Hemisps This Full-Colour Map of the World in Hemisps is from the Atlas de la GÃ©ographie Universelle ou Description de toutes les parties du monde , Sur un Plan Monde, DÂ'Apres Les Grandes Divisions Naturelles du Globe, Nouvelle (new) Edition By Malte-Brun, updated by M.J.J.N. Huot, published by Garnier Freres Editors, Paris c.1871 . This map was originally engraved in the late 1830's and modified over the following years. Map measures 57.5cm by 40.5cm (22.5in by 16in), printed on Thick Study Paper, with centre-fold & wide margins, and Blank on Reverse. A copper-plate engraved Hand Coloured map of the World in Hemisps. The map shows attempts to show everything that was known about the world in 1870, and the same level of importance is shown features in the Sea, on the Coast, and Inland, with all being covered on the same level. Each continent is shown in a different colour, and all the islands of the world are shown, as well as what was known of the coastline of Antarctica . The map shows both the physical geography & human/political geography of the world and does a good job of showing both well. All the major geographical features are shown (ie mountains, rivers, etc), all over the world, however you can see large areas of Africa, Russian Asia/Central Asia & Australia w the level of mapping is very little - interesting to see how little we knew about the world 140 years ago. All the major states/kingdoms are shown with borders, and the major cites & towns of the time. All the major Pacific and Atlantic Ocean islands are shown - interesting to see the name changes over time. Australia is still called New Holland and Tasmania, Van Diemens Land & Australia is still shown as New South Wales being the whole east coast. The old Chinese names still exist, before being changed by the Europeans. Canada is still New Britain (not Canada as it should be for 1871); Texas is shown; Central America is shown just as Guatemala. Herat is shown as an independant state (only existed off & on 1824-62); Nepal is shown; and much more interesting features. The level of accuracy in the mapping of 1870 compared to early in the 1800's, means the world is starting to look a lot more like we know it to be today. If something is not know, instead of just making it up (as most map-makers did) a dotted line is used to show what Malte-Brun thought the river/island/etc was. The Canadian Artic Islands are becoming more accurate, as is Greenland; northern Russia is still not that accurate but getting better; Australia/New Zeland & South East Asia are more accurate. The coastline of Antartica is slowly starting to be mapped, but at this early stage in its mapping is still highly inaccurate. This is the case especially with the part of Antartica below South America which has been coloured in, believing that it is the first part of the Antarctic inland to be mapped - BUT IT IS DOES NOT EXIST - have a look at todays maps and you can see how wrong it is. The map is hand fully coloured , and has very detailed representation of the geography, including the rivers, lakes, mountains, coastlines and islands, as well as the major towns/cities. Also shows the road & rail links of the time, including doted lines showing planned railways. The detail of the geography is quite amazingly detailed, especially w t are lots of mountains/rivers/coastlines. Malte-Brun was one of the most highly regarded 19th Century geographers', and th e level of detail/clarity shown in his maps is amongst the best you will ever find from the 1800' s. The map also possess a very beautiful looking cartouche. This is quite a stunning looking map that would look great Framed up on some-ones wall!
