c1880 Dr B J Kendall's Blackberry Balsam handbill quack medicine Dysentery Dr. B. J. Kendall's Blackberry Balsam for Dysentery and All Summer Complaints c1880 Measures approximately 14 by 5 inches. Minor chips and tears. Most tears are at the folds. Previously folded and therefore there are hard creases. Dampstaining and browning. Will be shipped folded. This is a handbill/broadside on thin paper. A great piece of ephemera. See photos for condition and content. From a web search: "A patent medicine manufacturer of Enosburg Falls, B. J. Kendall was a graduate of the University of Vermont Medical College (1868). He devised a spavin cure formula in the 1870s and incorporated the Dr. B. J. Kendall Company in 1883. Kendall gradually expanded his product line to treatments for a wide variety of animal and human ailments, and Kendall Company wagons traveled widely to sell medicines and distribute his booklet." Note(s): Dr. B. J. Kendall’s blackberry balsam, "a remedy for diarrhea, dysentery, cholera morbus, biliousness, and costive liver," was 122 proof whiskey reinforced with opium. Kimball Bros. & Co. of Enosburg Falls, Vt., was the sole proprietor of Kendall's Blackberry Balsam and Hamilton's old English black oil.
