Very Nice Ca. 1805 American Artillery officers eaglehead saber. The pommel is a large, very detailed eaglehead referred by E. Andrew Mowbray in his book "American Eagle Pommel Swords" as a "Salter Parrot Type" eaglehead. The hilt retains 85% of it's heavy gilt plating.Grip is a nice grade of bone, and is carved and checkered. There are a few tight cracks in the bone. The 28" long,1 3/8" wide curved blade has a single wide fuller. It is etched with various military trophies and floral patterns, along with a Dragoon soldier with saber in hand, and a winged figure of a women. The blueing on the blade has turned to a mostly plum color. The edge of the blade has one noticeable nick, and several very tiny ones. And no, i am not going to say they were from contact in battle from another sword. This is a very nice example of an early, rare pattern American sword.
