First off, total disclosure: I'm not sure what this is! Now I know it's a fish slice, a big 12" in length , and it dates to ca. 1820, give or take 5 years. The problem is determining what it is made from. I purchased this assuming it was coin silver. That is still my assumption, and that of several knowledgeable dealers who have looked at it, but one made the determination that it was in fact Britannia, or basically pewter. Well, I've never encountered Britannia Ware of this strength. That leads me to think it could be a lower grade silver, though t are no markings to indicate that either. It doesn't give or bend, and it rings brightly like silver would. Have I had it tested? No, I've been too busy and too cheap, so I go placing a potentially great bargain on eBay! Since I can really tell bidders very little with certainty, I'm placing this for auction with no reserve. The tentative attribution to Gale and Stickler of New York is based solely upon the appropriate time period and initial mark, though clearly the mark on the slice is slightly different than that of the NY firm that I am accustomed to seeing, and this piece does include pseudo hallmarks as well. I will welcome comments from the eBay community of silver collectors and dealers, but will maintain the no reserve, let it go for what it will policy this time. If nothing else, read more
