This is a truly rare crystal and pâte de verre (glass paste) Daum France paperweight. Daum is the only commercial crystal manufacturer employing the pâte de verre (glass paste) process for art glass and crystal sculptures, a technique in which crushed glass is packed into a refractory mould and then fused in a kiln. This paperweight has consists of two human faces, one in crystal and the other in pâte de verre . As in Gemini, it likely represents the duality and law of opposites in all things. The paperweight is approximately 30 years old and was designed by Hilton McConnico . Hilton McConnico is a famous Paris based designer and artist. He was the first American to have work permanently inducted into the Louvre's Decorative Arts collection. This paperweight was likely one of the first studio art glass works that McConnico created for Daum France. Prior to 1987, McConnico created a very limited number of art glass works for Daum. In 1987, he began to assume a larger number of Daum France commissions. McConnico was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1943 but has lived and worked in Paris since 1965. After working for such designers as Ted Lapidus and Yves St. Laurent, McConnico was set designer & art director for more than 20 films, including the cult classic "Diva."
