This book, which chronicles the friendship between Tom Clark and the Woodspirits, is by no means the definitive story. That story is still being written, as Tom Clark continues to delight the world with his Woodspirits collectibles. Rather, it is meant to be a door for the reader into the world of Woodspirits, a world that will be explored more fully in future accounts. ABOUT TOM CLARK Thomas Fetzer Clark grew up in Elizabethtown, North Carolina, in the 1930S. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Davidson College, his Bachelor of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary and his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. He continued his art education at schools in Boston, New York and London. Dr. Clark executed portrait busts for twenty years while also teaching in the religion department of Davidson College. In 1978, he and Joe Poteat, also a graduate of Davidson, formed a company, Cairn Studio to produce the figures now known as Woodspirits. Dr. Clark gave up his teaching in 1984 to devote his time to creating statues that are collected by art lovers all over the country. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ellen Fort Grissett grew up in Nashville, Tennessee and received a bachelor's degree in English and creative writing from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia. Since then she has written for a number of publications, including Atlanta Weekly; Southern Accents; Southern magazine; Business: North Carolina; Ladies' Home Journal and the Raleigh News and Observer. Married and the mother of two children, she lives in Raleigh, North Carolina. ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR Pamela Rattray Brown of Campobello, South Carolina is the daughter of a veterinarian father and a floral designer mother.
