What most youngsters may not realize is Colorado Blvd is also historic Route 66, the original road that motorists would take to travel west from Chicago all the way to Santa Monica beach. And like the song says, you could "get your kicks on Route 66." The eastern edge of the city of Pasadena had been , in that pre-interstate highway era, Pasadena's "red light district. "...That portion of Colorado Blvd. was not much more than a country road that cut through Hasting's Ranch and was lined with inexpensive bungalow motels, and a few farmhouses where weary travelers could get a home cooked meal. Today, Hastings Ranch is no longer a working ranch, and all the farmhouses are gone...the area is covered with housing tracts, and shopping malls. However a few of the Route 66 era motels do remain. This painting depicts the glowing green neon sign of the Hiway Host motel, still operational today. This is looking west toward the beach, another hour or so to drive from this point.
