With the maps by Hotchkiss and the material gatd by Allan the book shows how Jackson's campaign had an impact on all military operations in Virginia during the Spring and Summer 1862 campaign in the Shenandoah Valley. The book, which was originally written several years after the war in the 1880s, depict battles such as Kernstown and McDowell as well as areas around Winchester. Allan was a lieutenant-colonel and chief ordnance officer with the 2nd Corp of the Army of Northern Virginia. Hotchkiss served as a captain and topographical engineer with the 2nd Corp.The maps are full maps of the region and of the battlefields. The maps track movement of the Confederates in red and the Federal troops in blue.
