Canterbury Tales in Modern English by Geoffrey Chaucer, J.U. Nicolson and illustrated by Rockwell Kent, published by Garden City Books in 1934? and marked "CL" (see photo 6), Hardcover with dust jacket. Due to the condition of the book and the books mentioned on the back dust jacket, I think this book was published in the late 1940s or early 1950s, rather than 1934. The book is a gorgeous rendering of the lusty stories of England's Rabelais. A group of pilgrims bound for Canterbury Cathedral agree to pass the weary miles by taking turns at storytelling; thus begins English literature's greatest collection of chivalric romances, bawdy tales, fables, legends, and other stories. Translation into modern English verse by J. U. Nicholson. The book has wonderul gold and black full-page illustrations by Rockwell Kent (see photos 5, 8, 9, 10 & 11). The book is in good condition for its age with slightly browning pages from age. The dust jacket has wear, color darkening/fading and tears (see photos 1-3).
